More information : (SE 94548214) Castle (NR) (Site of). (1)
Castle Hill, reputed site of an early fortification. (2)
"Some of the Northumbrian kings are said to have resided here at a spot now called Castle Hill"
Foundations still visible in places. (3)
The site falls on a small natural knoll with no evidence of a motte. Such foundations as survive, two right-angled fragments of stony bank, suggest a building, probably a fortified manor house. Published survey (25") correct. (4)
SE 945821. Brompton. Remains of motte with signs of masonry and wet defence on one side. (6) Hinderwell writing in 1798 referred to the foundations of a castle here (5). (5-6)
SE 945822. Castle Hill. Scheduled. (7)
SE 94538215. Site of a fortified manor house, situated on a steep natural hill. Building remains are visible on the higher ground to the north and east of the site. The house may have been located here to protect the natural spring below. The site also contains two small brick buildings, built for the Home Guard during World War II, apparently as ammunition stores. Scheduled. (8) |
