More information : (SE 94548214) Castle (NR) (Site of). (1)

Castle Hill, reputed site of an early fortification. (2)

"Some of the Northumbrian kings are said to have resided here at a spot now called Castle Hill"

Foundations still visible in places. (3)

The site falls on a small natural knoll with no evidence of a motte. Such foundations as survive, two right-angled fragments of stony bank, suggest a building, probably a fortified manor house. Published survey (25") correct. (4)
