Summary : Possible site of a pele tower at Berrington, recorded in the 15th century. Built by 1415, it was decayed by 1541, and although partly repaired by 1561, nothing is known of its later history. The tower may have been superseded by a house, possibly built in 1689, part of which survives as an outbuilding. |
More information : A tower at Berrington is listed in the 15th century. (1)
It was in decay in 1542. (2)
There are no visible remains of a tower at Berrington. Part of an outbuilding dated 1698, however, constitutes the remains of a 'mansion' which traditionally stood at NU 00794328. The site (now occupied by cottages) is elevated, and a substantial 17th century house may well have superseded the tower. (3)
Listed by Cathcart King and Dodds. (4,5) |
