Summary : A bronze bell, together with 12 Roman silver coins was ploughed up in a field in Binnington Carr some 15 years ago (c.1876) and came into the possession of George Edson of Malton about 1881. The bell was minus a tongue, but there was just a trace left of what had evidently been an iron staple for hanging it. The coins comprise 7 of Vespasian, 3 of Vitellius, 1 of Julius Caesar and a fine specimen of Nero. The bronze bell and Roman coins from Binnington were bought by Canon J R Raine at Mr George Edson's Sale, 1891, and are now in Yorkshire Museum. The hoard was presumably deposited in the late 1st century AD. |
