Monument Number 63314

Hob Uid: 63314
Location :
North Lincolnshire
Scawby
Grid Ref : SE9512005760
Summary : Cropmarks of an aisled or corridor building contained in an enclosure with possible other buildings; Roman pottery and building debris has been recovered from the site and much slag; possible site of villa? A Roman stone coffin was found.
More information : [SE 95110571] Roman Building [GS] (Site of) (1)

Foundation stone, brick and tile, a little Samian and a fair amount of coarse ware indicate the site of a Roman building at Top Farm. A considerable quantity of iron slag [area at SE 9514 0593] and a stone coffin [SE 9541 0532] are probably but not certainly associated. (2-4)

All three indicated sites are under cultivation. The farmer ploughs up building stone from time to time around the published site, and considerable slag in the area indicated. He knows nothing of the stone coffin found. (5)

Centred SE 951057. Limestone rubble, tile frags, Roman greyware, coarseware and samian sherds, and much iron slag are recorded from Top Moor Farm. Cropmarks show a small ? corridor or aisled building at SE 95080570, with an enclosure circa 60-70m square, aligned NS-EW and with internal features - possibly further buildings - centred on SE 95160585. Between these latter buildings and the first are trackways running NW-SE towards Ermine Street circa 500m. to the east. The total area of the site is circa 3 ha. Also from area SE 956053 a Romano-British stone coffin is recorded. (6)

HU 19 Roman building debris and slag, though the SMR does not record it as a villa. (7)
