Wilton Hall

Hob Uid: 62655
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Wilton
Grid Ref : SE8625082720
Summary : Site of fortified manor house, granted a licence to crenellate in 1335. The site was excavated in 1975, revealing evidence of occupation from the 12th century or earlier. The moat which surrounded the house is roughly circular, with an outer bank standing up to 2 metres high. Aerial photographs reveal that the moat is itself enclosed on at least three sides by a larger, rectangular enclosure. Earthwork remains of ridge and furrow are visible to the south and west of the site.

SE 863 829. Wilton Hall. Full description of site and account of
1975 excavation which showed 12th century or earlier occupation of site (post-holes and cobbled area). A well, of unknown date, was found to the north of the northern outer rampart. (4)

The partly wet moat is well defined, apart from the north arm, and averages 20m in width and 2.2m in depth. It encloses a sub-rectangular raised platform which has an uneven surface, but no building foundations are visible. Slight channelling of the ground to the south of the moat probably represents the only remains of the fishponds. There is no trace of the well. Moat re-surveyed at
1:2500. (5)

SE 862 827. Wilton Hall moated site. Scheduled no. NY/910. (6)

Leland mentions what may have been a fortified tower on the site. (7)

Scheduled, RSM Number 35565. (8)
