More information : [SE 88377601] Roman Pottery, Urn and Coins, found previous to 1846. (ST). (1) Roman Potteries. In Scarborough Museum there is an urn with lid from Knapton. It was filled with ashes and burnt human bones. It seems to be the one illustrated in Archaeologia (see ref.). Three urns from the site are in the Malton Museum, presented by Dr. Adams of Billington. In the Yorks. Mus. is a brooch (Collingwood type R), labelled 1854, from Knapton. In 1928 trial trenches were dug on the site by Mr. Corder and Dr. Kirk. No structures were found but a great deal of gritted ware, often pink, but varying to brown and black were found. It seems likely that hand made cook pots were made here, and later the wheel rimmed pots of Signal Station type, (or at least, some of them). A trench in the farmhouse garden revealed a Roman Wall which disappeared under the house. Hinderwell mentions coins of Constantine and Carausius from this site, and Knox illustrates a coin:- ON GRATIANVS PF AVG GLORIA NOVI SAECULI TCON. (2)
