Excavations in the monastic precinct in 1972 revealed a group of Medieval buildings at this location. Buildings 2, 3 and 4 appear to have formed a complex partially superseded by building 5.
Building 3 was a large timber framed aisled building internally divided into cubicles, possibly a guest house or infirmary. Building 3 was connected to Building 2 which had a later lean-to added, Building 4. Buildings 2 and 4 were demolished when Building 5 was constructed circa 1500. Buildings 3 and 5 survived, probably until the late seventeenth century.
Building 5 was a brick structure with massive footings, possibly with an oven opening into a yard surrounded by a brick wall. Building 5 may be shown in the map of Abbey Mead c 1600 and was possibly the brewhouse noted in the 1540 inventory.
17th century pottery indicates later robbing of building materials. (1) |
