Summary : An ashlar obelisk situated in Studley Royal Park. The structure comprises a 15 metre high obelisk placed on a three metre high pedestal, set at the end of a long drive which, prior to construction of St Mary's Church (Monument HOB UID 51936) had views of Rippon Cathedral. It is thought that the obelisk replaced John Aislabie's Funerary Pyramid ( Monument HOB UID 1093695) which was erected by William Aislabie in memory of his father John in 1742. However Newman in 1996 states that The Obelisk was built for Elizabeth Sophia Lawrence, granddaughter of William Aislabie, replacing a "decayed" timber predecessor on the same site sometime after 1812, possibly erected to commemorate the victory of Waterloo. |

Obelisk (National Trust number 30040) built of ashlar and comprises a pedestal approximately 3 metres high and the obelisk, about 15 metres high. It is set at the end of a long drive and had views to Ripon Cathedral, prior to construction of St Mary's Church (Monument HOB UID 51936). The obelisk is thought to have replaced John Aislabie's funerary pyramid, a stepped pyramid of exactly the same height as the obelisk (Monument HOB UID 1093695) which William Aislabie had erected to the memory of his father John in 1742. However, Newman (5) states that the obelisk was built for Elizabeth Sophia Lawrence, granddaughter of William Aislabie, replacing a "decayed" timber predecessor on the same site sometime after 1812, possibly erected to commemorate the victory of Waterloo.
