More information : 20th century garden with formal and informal features at Lake House. Before 1922, the gardens consisted of a walled kitchen garden, bowling green with mature yew hedge, and a sloping lawn towards side stream of Avon to east of Lake House. Since 1922 a water garden has been created, and a formal rose garden garden enclosed by a flint walk and yew hedges. A swimming pool is present within part of the old vegetable garden. The main lawn leads to woodland and has a pleached lime alley. (1)
The gardens were laid out after 1922 by Colonel Bailey, with many of the features in place by 1937. The park is early-mid 18th century in date. (2)
The park was surveyed by the RCHME in 1986. An origin in the 17th century, rather than the early 18th, was suggested; the survey identified anumber of park features including possible park buildings including a dovecot (1582503) and a possible fishing lodge by the canal; the mound of barrow Wilsford 87 (218300) also seems to have been raised at this time to form a viewing mount.
