More information : (ST 50073881) 9th-10th century Saxon glass furnaces found during excavation (1-2)

Three, or perhaps four, glass furnaces were destroyed by the pre-Conquest construction of the Abbey cloister. Glass residues and crucible frgmants were recovered. This is the only Saxon site with firm evidence of furnaces and crucibles It is not yet clear whether the glass was made from raw materials. Some doubts as to whether the entire glass working site was excavated. (3)
