Summary : Church to Glastonbury Abbey established in 940 by St Dunstan and destroyed by fire in 1184. Rebuilding started immediately as a Late Norman Transitional church but changing to Early Gothic church. The church was dedicated early in the 14th century. Enlargements, particularly at the east and west ends, and alterations continued up to the Dissolution, after which the church was stripped and left to fall into ruin.
More information : (ST 50083885) The Great Church. Worked on from St. Dunstan's time onward, with particular activity after the Norman conquest, but all this destroyed by a fire in 1184. Rebuilding started immediately, apparently as Late Norman Transitional but quickly changing to Early Gothic (?influenced by Wells Cathedral) and the church was dedicated early in the 14th century. Enlargements, particularly at the east and west ends, and alterations continued up to the Dissolution, after which the church was stripped and left to fall into ruin. (1-4)
