Summary : Gatehouse built circa 1575 and a very stylish specimen of Elizabethan design. It is ashlar faced and rectangular with octagonal ogee-domed turrets at the angles and central archway. The three storeys are each decorated with an Order of columns: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. The interior is gutted and the roof almost gone. |

The gatehouse to the now demolished Tixall Hall (SJ 92 SE 12) is a very stylish specimen of Elizabethan design built c.1575.
It is a three-storeyed building, ashlar faced with octagonal ogee-domed turrets at the angles and a central archway. (2-3)
The interior is gutted and the roof almost gone. HHR grade 1. See illustration. (4)
The gatehouse is now roofless with the exception of the four turrets, otherwise no change. Outstanding. Published survey 1:2500 revised. See photograph. (5)
