Rosedale Abbey

Summary : The Priory of St Mary and St Laurence, a Cistercian nunnery founded before 1158 and dissolved in 1535. The only remains are an angle buttress and a spiral staircase, which were probably the south-west angle of the south transept. The staircase is visible as a ruined building on air photographs and was mapped as part of the North York Moors NMP. The feature is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography.

The Priory of St Mary and St Laurence, for Cistercian Nuns (though some sources give it as Benedictine). Founded before 1158, suppressed 1535. (2)

The only remains are an angle buttress and a spiral staircase, probably the SW angle of the S transept. (3)

'Rosedale Abbey' though incorrect, is the usual name. (4)

The remains, as noted by Pevsner, are in fair condition. See photograph. (5)

The staircase of the Cistercian nunnery is visible as a ruined building on air photographs, centred at SE 7236 9592. The feature is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography.
