Summary : Surface finds in 1975 of burnt stone, querns, a fragment of column, socket stones, iron slag and Romano-British pottery have been interpreted as indicating a settlement site, possibly a villa. Aerial phorography of this area shows cropmarks of a possible enclosure. |
More information : Bottomfields Lane, SE 714889 Several quern fragments, part of a circular column (?), iron slag and two socket stones found in 1975. Also a quantity of pottery (mainly Romano British) and burnt stones in the field to the east. (1) Area now a pasture field. No remains of any associated earthwork. (2)
Cropmarks of possible a possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure centred on SE 7140 8896 are visible on aerial photographs.(3) |
