More information : (SE 79407088) (1) Large quantities of Roman pottery (2)
mostly of the 3rd and 4th centuries (1) were found in the garden
of Sutton Cottage in 1933. Occupation floors were found over most
of the garden and stones laid diagonally across the garden probably
indicate the line of a Roman Road. Other finds include a boat
hook, spear-head and 12 Roman coins of the 3rd to mid 4th
centuries, all in Roman Malton Museum. (2) Further finds of pottery,
including 5 vessels containing fragments of calcined human bones,
a hippo-sandal (3) and a fragment of a gabled tombstone inscribed
Aurelius found in 1934 (5), all in Roman Malton Museum (3). Two
Roman coins (3rd and early 4th century) were found in the garden
of 'Coniston House' next door to Sutton Cottage by Alan Gibson
(4). (1-5)
