Summary : Excavations in 1933 to 1934 uncovered much Roman pottery, a boat hook, spear head, a hippo-sandal and coins dating from C3rd to C4th century AD, occupation floors, cremations, a fragment of a tombstone and a possible Roman road. The finds are in Roman Malton Museum. |
More information : (SE 79407088) (1) Large quantities of Roman pottery (2) mostly of the 3rd and 4th centuries (1) were found in the garden of Sutton Cottage in 1933. Occupation floors were found over most of the garden and stones laid diagonally across the garden probably indicate the line of a Roman Road. Other finds include a boat hook, spear-head and 12 Roman coins of the 3rd to mid 4th centuries, all in Roman Malton Museum. (2) Further finds of pottery, including 5 vessels containing fragments of calcined human bones, a hippo-sandal (3) and a fragment of a gabled tombstone inscribed Aurelius found in 1934 (5), all in Roman Malton Museum (3). Two Roman coins (3rd and early 4th century) were found in the garden of 'Coniston House' next door to Sutton Cottage by Alan Gibson (4). (1-5)
