More information : [SE 76417076] Roman Pavement found A.D. 1817 - 42 [TI]. (1) "'At Mosley Bank ... a Roman pavement was discovered ... within some strong foundations walls. The owner ... directed them to be covered with earth again...'(a). It seems to have been come upon not only in 1817, but again in 1842 (b). 'At Mosley Bank [sic.Mossey Bank, on the accompanying map (2)] ... a Roman pavement, Urns, and Coins have been discovered.'(c) 'About twenty years ago a handsome Roman tesselated pavement, exhibiting an urn and other figures, was discovered on this estate; and about two years ago...on the adjoining farm, called Roughborough ...another Roman pavement was found whilst cutting for a drain' (d). A Roman mill or quern, found on the farm of ... Musley Bank was presented by R.Boulton, of Malton, to the Literary Institute." (2) N.Micchelson and R.H.Hayes were told by the present owner,Col. Wilson, that nothing recognisably Roman had been found up to 1950, despite the fact that an air raid shelter was built, almost on the site marked, in 1939. (3) ROMAN BUILDING [GS] (Site of). (4)
Examination of all available air photography, at the general location indicated by Authority 1, could not identify any feature which might relate to this record. (5)
