Hob Uid: 59585
Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire
Catton
Grid Ref : SE7270051900
Summary : Probably thirteenth century Medieval deer park, but first mentioned in documentary sources in 1352. It contained a keeper's lodge. Disparking had taken place by 1616 when it was subdivided into closes.
More information : (SE 727519) Catton Park (NAT) (1)

Catton Deer Park belonging to the Percy family was possibly formed
in the 13th century but is first expressly mentioned in 1352.
It contained over 350 acres and in 1577 it included seven groves
and a keeper's lodge, but the pale had greatly decayed. In 1616
the park was divided into a dozen closes and the lodge was then
known as Park House. (2)

The boundary of the park (as delineated on the 1:10 000 Record
Sheet) consists of modern hedges (some on small banks) fences
and ditches, and in some places has been completely ploughed out.
None of these features showed any characteristics of a
Medieval park pale. (3)
