Monument Number 59509

Hob Uid: 59509
Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire
Cottingwith
Grid Ref : SE7120843920
Summary : Medieval moated site surviving as an earthwork, possibly the site of the fortified manor house known as Wheldrake Castle, extant in the late 12th century.
More information : (SE 71234391) Supposed (NAT) Site of a Hall (NR)
Moat (NR) (1)

A hill enclosed by a moat, which is the site of an ancient Hall. (2)

The moated site at Storwood (SE 712439) may be Wheldrake Castle which existed between 1178-85. A licence to refortify the site in 1199 was revoked before completion. (3)

A large moated enclosure in fair condition. The ditch, which is now dry, varies in width from 14.0m to 30.0m and averages 1.5m. deep. Although there are no remains within the level interior, the site is substantial enough for a fortified manor house. Published survey (25") revised. (4)

SE 713 439. Moated site S of Storwood. Scheduled No HU/156. (5)

The moated enclosure described by the previous authorities was seen as an earthwork on air photographs. There is another moated enclosure to the west. On the levelled interior of the main enclosure there is some evidence of possible buildings. The site has recently been surveyed by the Humber Wetlands Project. The computer generated model of the survey confirmed the possibility of buildings in the main enclosure. (6-6a)
