Summary : Medieval moated motte surviving as an earthwork. The Motte is 4 metres high and 23 metres in diameter. The enclosing moat is 1.5 to 2 metres wide and 1 metre deep. It has been suggested that it was built to guard the nearby crossing of the River Derwent. Scheduled.

Covered by dense undergrowth. Published survey (25") correct. (3)

SE 7104 4862. Giant's Hill motte. Scheduled RSM No 21192. A raised motte enclosed by a moat in Sutton Wood. The circular motte is 4m high and 23m in diameter. The sub-rectangular enclosing moat is 1.5m to 2m wide and 1m deep; it is seasonally wet. A pit about 1m wide and deep has been dug into the summit of the mound. Little is known about the history of the monument, although it has been suggested that it was built to guard the nearby crossing of the River Derwent. (4)

The motte described by the previous authorities was seen as an earthwork on early air photographs (1958) when tree cover was sparse. (5)

Listed as a possible Castle by Cathcart King. (6)
