Summary : Possible site of a Roman pottery kiln; pottery, querns and a brooch have been found in an area of cropmarks of possible enclosures.
More information : A scatter of pottery, slag and cinders, found by Lister at the Warren, was interpreted as the site of a Roman pottery kiln by Camden. The Warren is now called California (Centred at SE 755 497 on OS 2 1/2" 1953). (1) Existence of kiln not substantiated. There is evidence, from aerial photographs, for enclosures (a settlement site?), but no evidence of pot production from fieldwalking. (2) Romano-British pottery, brooch and quern from California Warren. (3)
