More information : SE 68448974 Kirk Howe (NAT). (1) An oval mound, 34.Om by 19.0m, was excavated by Hayes in 1974. A cairn, 21.0m by 18.0m in diameter, was exposed and found to contain the disturbed remains of a cremation and a possible inhumation. A fragment of ? Bronze Age pottery was found just under the turf and indications of a ditch, 0.8m wide and 0.4 to 0.5m deep, were seen on the S side of the cairn. (2) A cairn, known locally as "Kirk Howe" and visible as an ill- defined stony patch approximately 15.5m north to south and 19.0m east to west merging into ground level on the east side but about 0.2m high from the south side. There is no sign of a ditch but a shallow central depression marks the site of Hayes excavation. The site, littered by stone with several boulders placed in the hedgerow, is ploughed and currently seeded. Published Survey (25") Revised. (3)
