DESCRIPTION

Three Bronze Age Round Barrows surviving as earthworks. Visible on air photographs the barrows were mapped as part of the North York Moors National Park NMP project. All three barrows appear extant on the latest 2009 vertical photographs. Scheduled.

('A' - SE 50948543; 'B' - SE 50978536; 'C' - SE
51038530) Tumuli (NR). (1)

Several Tumuli, situated 1/2 mile south of Hambleton Mosses on
Hambleton Down. (2)

('A' - SE 50948543) Tumulus ploughed away, 1961.

('D' - SE 50988531) Cairn. (3)

'A' Ploughed through and now visible only as a slight rise.

'B' Turf covered earthen mount mutilated and accentuated by
ploughing and now 20.0m diameter and about 1.5m high. There is a
slight central hollow and the remains of a probable excavation
tench cutting through from it to the NW.

'C' A turf covered earthen mound 20.0m diameter and 1.7m high
mutilated around its perimeter and accentuated by ploughing.

'D' All that remains at this site is a flat turf-covered stoney
area about 10.0m N/S by 5.0m. It is impossible to say if this
was a cairn as suggested by Hayes but it is very doubtful.

SE 5093 8543. Round barrow 400m SE of Hill Fort Windypit. Scheduled
RSM No 25559 (see 'A' above).

SE 5102 8530. Round barrow 600m NE of South Woods. Scheduled RSM No
25561 (see 'C' above).

SE 5097 8536. Round barrow 500m SE of Hill Fort Windypit. Scheduled
RSM No 25560 (see 'B' above).

The barrows are visible on air photographs and were mapped as part of the North York Moors National Park NMP project. The most northerly of the barrows, centred at SE 5094 8544, has been denuded compared to the other two. The central barrow, centred at SE 5098 8537, has evidence of intervention in a central pit and a second dug into the north-east side; the remains of possible excavation as described by authority 4 above. All three barrows appear extant on the latest 2009 vertical photographs.
