More information : (SE 5365 7907) Cams Head. (NAT). (1)
SE 537 791. Cistercian grange of Byland Abbey (see SE 57 NW/1), at Cams Head. There are traces of former buildings in the paddock to the south of the present farmhouse, and other faint earthworks may be detected farther to the south and east. It would seem to have been a small grange or lodge of Byland: a unit in the larger home demesnes of the abbey, and stood near the important monastic fishponds (see SE 57 NW/14). Following the suppression of the abbey, the granges of 'East Camb' and 'West Camb' were valued at #3 and #2 a year respectively. (No remains visible on RAF Aerial Photographs 1950). (2)
A cow pasture at `Cambe' was granted to the monks of Byland, while they resided at Hood, (see SE 58 SW/32) by Roger de Mowbray in 1140. (3)
SE 5365 7905. Traces of buildings were noted by Platt to the south of the present farm, but these have now disappeared. (4)
An examination of all the available air photographs revealed no evidence of the traces of buildings described by authorities 2 and 4. (5) |
