More information : Romano-British occupation site at Crayke, where 50 tons of stone was removed from Toad Close field (SE 552694) in 1956. Two beehive querns and some potsherds were noted at the same time. Trial trenched (at SE 55246949, 55296949 and 55266945) revealed extensive patches of rough paving or cobbles, roofing slabs and flue tiles. Pottery found here, and at (SE 55146961) was mainly 4th century AD. Several mounds and uneven patches that had stones beneath could be seen in the field to the west of Toad Close. A beehive quernstone was ploughed up at (SE 55696958) by O Slater in 1956. It is now in possession of Mr Wavriner, The Riddings, Easingwold Road. (1-2) Field boundaries in this area have been largely removed, and the indicated area of Toad close field is partly under crop. The ploughed area was perambulated, but no significant finds were made. Cleared boulders abound at field margins; the mounds mentioned in the field to the W of Toad Close no longer exist. They were possibly early clearance heaps, now removed as the field is ploughed. The site is on a gentle SW-facing slope, about 130ft ASL. OS APs extant, but not available for examination. RAF APs (2) negative. (3) Possibly NK 7 Hypocaust box tile found here, possible villa site.
