Summary : A Benedictine nunnery founded circa 1147 dissolved 1536 .The site is now occupied by a late 17th century house. The house was built circa 1660 for George Payler. The building is U-shaped in plan and is built of red brick, laid in English garden wall bond, with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. The building features brick pilasters. The house has some minor alterations of the 18th century and the early to mid 20th century.

The priory for Benedictine Nuns was founded c.1147. All that survives is the nave of the church, dedicated to St. Mary,
(See SE55NW10) the present east wall dating from 1873. (2-3)

There are no visible remains of the priory other than those incorporated in the nave of the present church of St. Mary. 'The Priory' is a 17th c private residence.(4)

Grade II*. The Priory. 1690. Brick with bays divided by pilasters with stone caps. Hipped tile roof. 2 storeys. 7 sash windows. Doorway with open scrolly pediment on corbels excellently carved. Low deep porch on Tuscan columns on west side. Interior; staircase with fully fashioned balusters. (5)

Pevsner notes that this is the site of a Benedictine Priory founded circa 1150. He describes the 17th century country house as "Nun Monkton Hall, built it is said circa 1690, two storeys hipped roof, facade of 7 bays with giant pilasters". Note the use of this alternative name. (6)
