NUN MONKTON PRIORY

ALTERNATIVE NAME:  NUN MONKTON HALL, THE PRIORY

A Benedictine nunnery founded circa 1147 dissolved 1536 .The site is now occupied by a late 17th century house. The house was built circa 1660 for George Payler. The building is U-shaped in plan and is built of red brick, laid in English garden wall bond, with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. The building features brick pilasters. The house has some minor alterations of the 18th century and the early to mid 20th century.
