More information : (SE 456 447) ROMAN COINS (R) have been found here (NAT). (1) SE 456 446 Investigation by RCHME of land clearance yielded nothing, but by the side of Rudgate flints, Roman sherds, grey ware and Dales ware , also Medieval sherds were found. (2)
SE 457 446 Road works exposed two bodies and Romano-British pottery of third and fourth century date. A bronze penannular brooch, buckle and bracelet had been removed by workmen. A later trench revealed a compact charcoal-filled clay horizon, rich in bone, sherds and building stone under rig and furrow. Probably part of ribbon development along Rudgate, south of the fort. (3)
An air photograph interpretation by the RCHME as part of the Newton Kyme Project revealed that there is a cropmark enclosure (SE 4562 4461, recorded in SE 44 NE 32) in the vicinity of Adaman Graves. The enclosure is probably part of the Roman 'vicus' developed south of Newton Kyme Roman fort (see SE 44 NE 6). (4)
