Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 54959

Hob Uid: 54959
Location :
North Yorkshire
Selby
Tadcaster
Grid Ref : SE4860043250
Summary : Traces of Tadcaster town defences are recorded in the 18th and 19th centuries, Camden refering to a ditch surrounding the town as a part of the defences of the Roman town. There are now no extant remains.
More information : [Area centred SE 4860 4325] Hachuring of a bank or
terrace shown but not described [which together with property
boundaries forms an apparently continuous earthwork on the west
side of Tadcaster with a corner formed in the south-west]. (1)

Speight (2) refers to 'entrenchments' extending along the lane
south-west of 'John Smith's brewery' by St. Joseph's Lane past
Castle Hill on the north side where some traces existed. He
associates them with the Battle of Tadcaster Bridge in 1642
[SE 44 S.E. 15] but Camden (3) refers to a ditch surrounding the
town as part of the defences of the Roman town [see SE 44 S.E.7]. (2-3)

The town defences at Tadcaster have now disappeared but may have
dated from early Norman or a pre-conquest period, the motte
[SE 44 SE 6] probably having been superimposed. (4)
