St. Mary's Nunnery Farmhouse (5) Syningthwaite, was erected on the site of the priory and incorporated a Late Norman arch and another with zigzags intersecting across a roll-moulding. To the right of the latter arch there are two smaller blank arches, the beginning probably of some arcading in the cloister. The main gateway could have led to the refectory. Opposite the gateway some fragments of Norman to 14th century date have been built into a wall (6) Grade 2. (5-6)
Survey of 1963 revised. Otherwise as described. (7)
The moat surrounding the farm buildings, associated with the priory is visible on air photographs as earthworks. A bank within the northern end of the moated enclosure was also visible. (8) |
