Summary : The foundations of a castle were reported to be visible in the grounds of Abbey House in 1789. Although the house is situated in a natural setting of some strength, field investigation in 1963 found no indications of a former castle within the grounds.

The foundations of a castle, called Castle Cary, are visible in the

grounds of Abbey House, above the Cock River, Aberford. Situated

between Cock Beck and the deep ravine through which flows the Crow, a

stream rising on Hook Moor [SE 4435]. (1-2)

Abbey House (now known as Aberford House (a) ) is situated at
SE 43363716 in a natural setting of some strength. There are,
however,
no indications of a former castle within its grounds,
and the owner was unable to offer further information. (3)
