Summary : Country house constructed on the chapel of a grange of Pontefract Abbey. This was built circa 1200 and extended circa 1500. After the Dissolution, the grange was incorporated into a courtyard house, circa 1560. The house was enlarged in the 1630s with the addition of the south wing, and in the 1660s when the main range was extended northwards and the North wing added. Alterations were also carried out in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The building is a U-plan around a forecourt which faces east. Now partly subdivided into flats. |
