Summary : The site of a Roman mansio or villa has been alleged based on a find of large building foundations and stone pillars in about 1806, no remains now visible. The site is adjacent to a Roman road.
More information : "....in a field north of Gatenby Gate by Leeming Lane, large foundations of buildings were taken up about 16 years ago, together with a brick pavement, 2 or 3 pillars, and some stones, apparently bases, whose mouldings seem to have been wrought by Roman models".(a). (1) Gatenby Gate not shown on OS 6" or 1", but the road from Gatenby debouches onto Leeming Lane at Theakston Grange (SE 30968641). (2) No knowledge and no trace of buildings at SE 30989645. (3) In c1806 large foundations of buildings were taken up. Possibly a mansio site, as beside Dere Street. (4)
