Summary : Pre-Conquest church, now used as the Woodhorn Church Museum. The nave, and perhaps the West tower, are pre-Conquest. The North aisle is early 12th century, the South aisle mid 12th century. The East arcade arches and the chancel arch are 13th century. The external walls, except the West end and tower were restored by B and J Green of Newcastle in 1843. Late 9th-early 10th century Saxon cross fragments are present, (See NZ38NW2). Excavations have demonstrated the existence of late 12th century arcades and that the early church had an apsidal end. It is thought that the site is that of Wudecestre, granted to Lindisfarne by Ceolwulf in 737. The church was the burial place of at least one of the victims of the wreck of the EMBLA in 1854 [see 1500274]. |
