More information : [Area centred SE 3169 1923] ? I.A. Fort. (1) "Several depressions in the ground here were believed to be hut circles. Mr Brian Hope-Taylor examined two which we had opened in 1952 and I believe he shares my opinion that they were ironstone pits". (2) A.P.s indecisive. (3) At SE 3173 1923 there is a small area of superficial depressions with associated spoil maps now partially levelled and grass covered. The remains represent old ironstone workings or other early industrial activity. (4) SE 318193 Excavations in two places within a threatened area of the site called "The Mount", produced a Roman oven, and a ditch sealed by a layer of charcoal and wood ash containing Roman pottery. A 2nd or 3rd century rim sherd and a mill stone came from the filling of the oven. (5)
