More information : "In 1943 a field near Langwith House (SE 28688175) near Well, was requisitioned for demolition (sic) by the War Dept. and very soon masonry was noticed and a piece of Roman 'concrete' turned up, 4" X 2 1/2" X 2" very roughly shaped with some half dozen tesserae inset, apparently very similar to that found in the Villa at Holly Hill (SE 28 SE 1), two miles away. The site on which the tesserae were found is low lying and marshy". (See also SE 28 SE 5). (1) "The fragment of tessellated pavement found at Langwith, 1 1/2 miles East of Well, may be discounted (as evidence for settlement): partly because it was discovered in the waterlogged ground of the river - a most unlikely site for any building at that date - and partly because its resemblance to the Well pavements is so close that it may be explained as part of one of them transported with other debris as metalling for a track across the marsh."
