More information : [SE 2342 7888] Castle [GT] (Site of). (1) Undoubtedly an old castle was standing, large stones in a few places projecting from the ground have been dressed by skilled workmen. (2) Burton upon Ure. Near Albborough Hall is the site of a castle founded by Wm. Le Gros, Earl of Albemarle who in 1138 was created Earl of York. (3) The published site of the castle is centred in an area of faint ground disturbance with traces of rubble walling protruding above the surface. The remains measure approximately 30m. N-S and 32m. E-W and are too ill-defined to justify survey action. The site occupies a slightly elevated position, but is overlooked by rising ground on the east and south east, and is non defensive. There are no associated earthworks or other artificial features. The only trace of 'skillfully dressed stones' (authy 2) occurs at SW 2335 7890 where a ruined half buried wall of ashlar projects from the bank of the River Ure. This wall is partly encircled by a dry water course (re-surveyed at 1/2500) and was indicated as the remains of the castle by the present owner Mr. C.F.E. Bardsley-Powell of Aldburgh Hall. The wall appears to be the remains of a mill race and the water course is probably the goit to this mill. A stream feeding this goit at SE 2338 7888 has now been piped underground though various overflow pipes and springs still issue from the bank of the river and flow through the rubble which now blocks the race. It is most unlikely that these latter remains constitute a castle site. (4)
