Summary : Mile End opened to serve District line trains on 2nd June 1902 before becoming a joint station with the addition of Metropolitan line services in 1936. In 1946 Mile End became an intermediate station on the Central line extension from Liverpool Street to Stratford. With the opening of the Central line the surface station was rebuilt in the flat Portland stone style based on Holden's designs of the early 1930s, whilst the platforms were obstructed by numerous pillars, giving a rather gloomy effect overall. |
