Monument Number 508

Hob Uid: 508
Location :
Northumberland
Alwinton
Grid Ref : NT8248011860
Summary : Foundations of a possible sheepfold or outlier to steadings and enclosures.
More information : Situated on the E side of the river terrace above Blind Burn and to
the immediate W of a modern sheep stell are the ill-defined remains ofa sub-rectangular building or small enclosure measuring 6m N-S by 4.5mtransversely inside a turf bank 0.6m maximum height and 2.5m wide.
There is now no trace of the W side which has probably eroded down thesteep natural scarp into the burn. There is a break of some 4m at
the S end of the E side which may have been an entrance.
Around the outside on the S and NE are the remains of an outer turf
bank 0.3m high and 1.8m wide with opposing break and an internal ditch0.2m deep and 1.3m wide. This outer bank is an unusual feature.
The identity and purpose of the site is not clear,it may be associatedwith the sheep fold or its predecessor or may be a possible outlier tothe steadings and enclosures some 200m to the NW (NT 81 SW 14)
Condition too poor to warrant any survey action. (1)
