Summary : A large country House built by Jeffry Wyatville in 1813-4 for Robert and Amelia Heron, housing a school since around 1950. There is a date stone plaque on the south front of the hall. Robert Heron had demolished the medieval church from a site just north of the present house in the late 18th century. The main block consists of a gault brick range with ashlar dressings and a shallow hipped concrete tile roof. To the north west are ealy and late 18th century brick service wings and a small gault brick house, all with shallow hipped concrete tile roofing. The main facade is of two storeys and five bays, with an ashlar ground floor and moulded eaves. Some 17th century architectural details including parts of tuscan columns may have come from Felton Hall and Beckingham Hall. The 17th century rounded arch and tuscan pilasters of the gateway to the south of the present hall is known to have come from Felton Hall, and is now flanked by rubble walls with pantile coping. There is also an early 18th century ice house. |
