Summary : Gateway arch, originally part of the gate tower of Lanercost Priory. Early 13th century. Calciferous sandstone squared and coursed rubble (from the nearby Roman Wall), with red sandstone dressings. Arch and fragments of the flanking tower. Chamfered segmental arch of three orders, hood mould and moulded corbel stops with fragments of fan vaulting. Remains of flanking walls. Rear of arch has flanking buttresses. Rear wall of tower to right has blocked segment-headed entrance to porter's lodge. |
