Summary : Alleged Roman fort (probable field boundary)
More information : [SE 18232634] What looked like the bank and ditch at one corner of a Roman Fort was discovered by Dr. Villy. Further investigation gave negative results. (1-3) No surface evidence of a Roman Fort exists at the indicated position. Villy probably mistook the remains of a removed field boundary which is still clearly defined as an artificial terrace extending from Field Head House to Snelsins Lane. (4) Excavations carried out at Snelsins Farm revealed no evidence of a Roman site. The ditches appeared to be natural faults in the bedrock. (5)
