More information : A chalk block 0.22m by 0.12m, thickness unknown, found in 1971 built into the inner face of the west wall of the second Classis Britannica fort (TR 34 SW 2, TR 319413) in the second course from thebottom. The block, which remains in situ, carries an 'inverted' inscription which reads: [E]VSEB III IV IV. "The party of" Eusebius "cut" three, four four "blocks". This seems to be a tally of work done at the chalk quarry, apparently in three stages. Some damage occurred at the end of the stone and removed the initial letter. Information from Mr B Philp. (1)
