More information : Evidence of a late 1st c BC/1st c AD settlement was revealed as a result of a landslide of part of the "Saxon earthworks" south of St Mary de Castro Church, Dover Castle. Excavations carried out in 1962 by the Ministry of Works, under the direction of Mr Martin Biddle, comprised a single trench through the earthwork, centred at TR 32644176. In the lowest levels were found pits, gulleys, floor levels and Iron Age potsherds. (1-3)
Within Dover castle excavations adjacent to the Church of St Mary in Castro have produced evidence for Iron Age occupation of the site. This evidence was revealed in a series of pits, gulleys, floor levels and pot sherds and is probably associated with the presumed Iron Age hillfort (TR 34 SW 99) which is occupied the site. Scheduled. (4)
