Monument Number 467495

Hob Uid: 467495
Location :
Kent
Dover
Sutton
Grid Ref : TR3140047200
Summary : A Roman altar, found in 1949 was presented to Dover Museum. It has a modern inscription which throws doubt on its authenticity.
More information : (TR 314472) A small Roman altar bearing the inscription
- D-M, G-AELIVS,BRACTVS,V-S-L-M, was found by M Dare at Napchester
on Aug 5th 1949, and presented by him to Dover Museum.

The altar was found projecting from the "heterogeneous banking of
earth and stones at the side of the clover field nearest the Roman
Road (RR 100). In the banking were several stones which (without
closer examination) appeared to have dressed edges." The field was
in the area of the V formed by the Roman road and the lane connecting
Napchester with Whitfield.

RAF APs of the area (taken in April 1946) show a grid-shaped outline
and a solid dark rectangle unaccounted for by anything above ground.

NMR APs however show neither of these features.

Wright concluded that while the stone is of Roman date the (Latin)
inscription was cut in modern times. (1,2,3)

The stone is in Dover Museum on display and is as described. (4)

R.P. Wright's doubts about the inscription on the Roman altar
found at Napchester are noted. (5)
