Summary : Infirmary at St Augustine's Abbey constructed during the early 12th century with later additions. Excavated 1903-1907 but has now been covered up again and the area used a playing field. The main walls are visible as parch-marks in the summer. The infirmary hall ran north-south and was eight bays long with an aisle on the east with a chapel on its south east side. New refectory buildings were added in the 1270's and other buildings by the late middle ages. |
More information : (TR 15565779: See illustration card for plan) The infirmary, St Augustine's Abbey, comprised a hall with an aisled chapel of late C12 date. To this various subsidiary buildings were added in the C14 and C15. Its foundations were fully excavated in 1900-1907 by St John Hope and S Evans and now lie below the playing fields. (1-8)
