Summary : First Abbots Lodgings at St Augustine's Abbey. Claustral buildings on the west side of the cloister originally built by Abbot Hugh de Fleury included the Abbot's Lodging. This was at the south end of the range and contained on the ground floor the outer parlour for converstion with visitors and the cellarers office and store. The upper floor was probably for guest accomodation. In the late 13th century under Abbot Thomas Fyndon (1283-1309) the whole of range was taken over for the Abbot and additional buildings constructed along the sides of the inner and outer court. When the buildings were first set up round the cloister by Abbot Hugh of Fleury (1099-1124) the W range contained on the ground floor the outer parlour for conversation with visitors and the cellarer's office and store. In the late C13 the whole range was taken over for the abbot - his chapel (TR 15 NE 275) was at the S end over the parlour and his private rooms over the stovehouse.
Two doors and two windows remain which belonged to the abbots quarters. The cellarer's office, hall and store (TR 15 NE 305) were rebuilt on the N side of the Great Court. (4)
