The Great Court

Hob Uid: 464632
Location :
Kent
Canterbury
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TR1544057870
Summary : Eleventh to 12th century courtyard at St Augustine's Abbey enlarged during the late 13th century when the main service buildings were relocated in an outer court to the north. Excavations have suggested that during the Roman period the area may have been used as a cemetery but by the middle Saxon to early medieval periods the area was used as an extra mural agricultural area. A large number of pits and gullies associated with industrial activity were also found pre-dating the laying of the outer court metalling.
More information : (TR 15415780 - The Great Court. TR 15445787 - The Outer Court,
St Augustine's Abbey - see illustration card for plan). The
Great Court, St Augustine's Abbey, C11/C12, was enlarged in the
late C13 and the main service buildings relocated in an outer
court to the north. (1-4)

A sequence of early C14 outer court metallings, Medieval drains,
early medieval pits, and Anglo-Saxon features were recorded during
excavations, 1983-4, by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust. The
sequence of deposits and features exposed indicate that parts of
the college grounds may have been occupied from the Middle Anglo-
Saxon period onwards. Indeed, there is some evidence to suggest
that a cemetery and extra-mural agricultural area existed here in
the Roman period. (5-7)
