St Augustines Abbey

Hob Uid: 464612
Location :
Kent
Canterbury
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TR1548057800
Summary : Frater or refectory to the north of the cloister at St Augustine's Abbey known to have rebuilt and enlarged in the 1260s. Excavations have indicated the presence of an earlier refectory on the site possibly part of the Saxon Monastery. The wall facing the cloister appears to have had some form of ornamental arcading. The refectory may have been on a raised level as an early photograph shows a crypt under it.
More information : Frater, St Augustine's Abbey: C12, rebuilt in 1260-69. The S wall had an arcade of which traces remain. (1)
