Summary : Excavations in 1955-57 revealed the foundations of a building, possibly a small detached chapel belonging to the Saxon church. It may have had a western tower and may have been the last of four churches aligned east-west across the site. Possibly dates to the 11th century.
More information : (TR 15425776). Remains of Saxon buildings producing the plan of
a small detached chapel (see Illustration Card) were found during
excavations at the W end of St Augustines Abbey Church 1955-7.
Dated to c1000 by pottery. (1)
