Summary : Excavations have revealed the foundations of a probable Saxon tower at the south west corner of the Abbey church. Instead of being demolished when the Norman south west tower was constructed part of it was retained as a buttress. The probable date is thought to be early 11th century. |
More information : (TR 15415774 - see Illustration Card for location and plan). An L-shaped mass of masonry at the SW corner of the Norman Abbey Church was excavated in 1955-8 by A Saunders for the DOE. It is thought to be the remains of a Saxon tower. (1) Additional reference. (2) Pre-Conquest date confirmed by excavations in 1976-1978 by H Woods. (3) Probably the remains of a tower beside the gate to the W forecourt of the Anglo-Saxon church (TR 15 NE 269). Instead of being demolished when the Norman SW tower was constructed, part of it was retained as a buttress. Probable date: early 11th century. (4)
